“I did everything I could to get my son to study for the SAT. The flashcards were perfect as they enabled our whole family to use them. The pictures and accompanying sentences were the key. The whole family increased their vocabulary!”

How will learning these vocabulary words help me to raise my SAT scores?

Advanced vocabulary words occur throughout the entire critical reading section of the SAT. If you do not  know the definitions of the answer choices on the sentence completions, you will have to “guess.” However, if you know the definitions of the words you see on the test, you’ll greatly improve your chance of selecting the correct answer. Likewise, the reading passages are full of advanced vocabulary words, both in the passages and in the questions. We have researched over 10 years of SAT tests to determine which words are most likely to occur on the SAT.

How should I study these flashcards?

Start out by reading the sentence and definition of the vocabulary word to understand how the picture, definition, and sentence are related. Go through the vocabulary deck as many times as needed until you are able to get the meaning of the word by only looking at the front of the flashcard. Now, have someone test you (or you can do this yourself) by covering up the picture and the sentence so you can only see the vocabulary word. Merely looking at the word should trigger the memory of the picture and definition. Congratulations! You have now mastered the words that will help you to improve your SAT Critical Reading Score.

Okay! Now I have mastered the vocabulary words, but I’d like to learn more!

Great! Now you are ready to make your own flashcards on blank 3"X5” index cards. You will have noticed by now that there are many synonyms on the back of the flashcards. Look up the definitions of these words and create your own flashcards with the word on the front and the definition on the back. Make word relationships and group the words accordingly, such as into groups of synonyms, antonyms, or other ways of relating the words to each other. As you read new books and learn new vocabulary words, continue to create your own flashcards.
